Ruskin Spear

Title: Ends and Means

Medium:  Pencil on paper signed and dated 1938.

This is an interesting drawing as I always thought the character looked familiar and I began to think about the book in the picture, which is Ends and Means. This was written by the writer, Aldous Huxley. I showed the drawing to Tanya Harrod, who, at the time, was writing her extraordinarily wonderful book Humankind:Ruskin Spear. Tanya believed that this may well be a portrait of Huxley himself and it is was included in the book on p30 where she talks about Ends and Means being one of Spear’s favourite books, which he chose along with the Bible and Shakespeare as reading material when he appeared on Desert Island Discs in 1973. This could well be a tribute to Huxley. Spear was a lifelong pacifist. Unframed.
