Jack Crabtree

Title: Dark Horizon with Ominous Cloud, Donegal

Description: Mixed media on paper, 1989, signed and dated lower right ’89. Artist’s title inscribed and signed on a label verso.

A wonderfully atmospheric Donegal landscape dominated by the enormous dark cloud of Crabtree’s title. Suspended above a low, distant horizon, it seems almost to fill the composition, its edges bleeding and dissolving into the surrounding sky.

The landscape itself is reduced to a few spare washes and lines, leaving the cloud to carry the drama of the picture. There is an almost abstract quality to the image, but also a very particular sense of weather — that moment when a landscape seems to darken beneath an approaching storm. Framed.
