Josef Herman

(1911–2000)
Josef Herman devoted his career to portraying the dignity and resilience of everyday workers—farm labourers, peasants, fishermen, and coal miners. From 1944 to 1955, he lived in Ystradgynlais, a South Wales mining community, where he formed deep bonds and produced some of his most enduring images of miners. His empathetic, monumental style celebrates the humanity of working people and reflects his belief in their central role in society. Wherever he travelled, Herman continued to champion the workers of the world through his paintings and drawings, leaving behind a body of work rich in social commitment and artistic strength.
