Yvaral

Title: Mystique I

Medium: Silkscreen in colours on paper, 1991, signed and marked as EA, epreuve d’artiste, (artist’s proof) in pencil aside from the edition of 100.

An extraordinary interpretation of Marilyn Monroe by French Op Art pioneer Yvaral (Jean-Pierre Vasarely), transforming one of the most recognisable faces of the twentieth century into a mesmerising arrangement of blue and white squares. Viewed from a distance, Marilyn’s features emerge with remarkable clarity, while closer inspection reveals an intricate geometric composition in which individual elements of colour and tone take on a life of their own.

The son of Victor Vasarely, Yvaral developed his own distinctive approach to optical and numerical art, exploring how familiar images could be broken down and reconstructed through mathematical systems. Created in 1991, Mystique I brings together the visual language of Op Art with the instantly recognisable imagery of popular culture, producing a portrait that seems to shift between abstraction and representation as the viewer moves towards or away from it.
