Yvaral
(1934 – 2002)
Jean-Pierre Vasarely, known as Yvaral, was the son of op art pioneer Victor Vasarely, yet he carved out his own celebrated career in the field of geometric abstraction. A founding member of the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel (GRAV) in 1960 alongside Julio Le Parc, François Morellet, and others, Yvaral explored the optical and perceptual effects of precisely calibrated shapes, grids, and colour contrasts. His work is markedly distinct from his father’s, often pushing op art into new territory through systematic variations and controlled distortions that engage and challenge the viewer’s eye. Revered internationally, Yvaral’s art stands as a testament to innovation within a genre his family helped define.
