Julian Trevelyan
Title: Avignon
Description: Etching and aquatint in colours on T.H. Saunders wove paper, 1971-72. Signed, titled and numbered 32/65 in pencil to bottom margin. From The Provencal Suite, printed by Studio Prints, published by Leslie Waddington Prints Ltd., London
A wonderfully inventive view of the Palais des Papes in Avignon, its imposing medieval architecture rising above a tightly packed jumble of buildings. Trevelyan combines delicate etched lines with broad areas of colour, setting the pale stonework against a great red sun and a vivid blue foreground.
The composition has an almost dreamlike quality, with buildings stacked together in playful patterns and small boats adding a sense of life and movement. Characteristic of Trevelyan’s distinctive approach to landscape and architecture, the work balances careful observation with a wonderfully imaginative sense of place.
Condition: Excellent fresh impression.
