A wonderfully imaginative view of Florence Cathedral, its magnificent dome rising above a city transformed into a network of golden lines and shapes. Trevelyan combines the intricate architectural detail of the Duomo with a strikingly simplified landscape, setting the pale buildings against warm ochre, terracotta and deep red.

There is an almost dreamlike quality to the composition, with the familiar landmarks of Florence arranged in a playful, unexpected way. The contrast between the carefully etched architecture and the loose, patterned surroundings gives the work its distinctive character, balancing Trevelyan’s fascination with buildings and his delight in colour and invention.

Condition: Excellent fresh impression. Slightest undulation to paper (Unexamined out of frame, which has a few chips).
