Jack Crabtree

Title: Hillside Late Evening with Violet Sky, Rosbeg

Description: Mixed media on paper, 1989, signed and dated lower right ’89. Artist’s title inscribed on a label verso.

A wonderfully atmospheric landscape of Rosbeg, Donegal, dominated by the violet sky of Crabtree’s title and the dark hillside beneath it. Broad sweeps of colour give the landscape an almost abstract simplicity, while flashes of green, red and ochre bring the hillside sharply into focus.

Crabtree pares the landscape back to its essential forms, balancing the weight of the land against the openness of the evening sky. The result is both observed and expressive, capturing a particular place and moment without becoming descriptive.
