L. S. Lowry
Autograph Letter Signed (‘L. S. Lowry’) to Mattie Lowry, mother of Carol Ann Lowry, neither of whom were relations of the English artist. The letter is written to the verso of a colour picture postcard depicting a ‘Horse Tram’ (itself an interesting choice of subject by Lowry) on the Promenade at Douglas, Isle of Man, and reads, in full, ‘I got to Nottingham quite safely. Carol is really very good – She is showing me the sights of Leicester. She is a very good guide. The weather is good here in Brighton. Hope that this card finds you as it leaves me‘.
In 1957, at the age of thirteen, Carol Ann Lowry had written (at the suggestion of her mother) to Lowry to ask his advice on becoming an artist. A lifelong friendship ensued, with Carol Ann calling Lowry ‘Uncle Laurie’, and the artist bequeathed his entire estate to her, including a sizeable collection of his own paintings.
