John Yardley

Title: The Red Sunshade

Medium: Watercolour on paper, signed lower right.

A lively, light-filled composition centred around a striking red sunshade, which anchors the scene and draws the eye immediately. Figures gather and move beneath it, suggested with John Yardley’s characteristically economical brushwork.

Believed to depict a Venetian setting, the composition is held together through colour and light rather than detail, with the bold red acting as a focal point within the looser surrounding washes. The result is a scene full of movement and atmosphere, typical of Yardley’s southern subjects.

Exhibited: Richard Hagen.

Dimensions: 25 x 35 cm (Image) 46 x 55 cm (Framed)
