Jack Crabtree

Title: Dark Hillside, Donegal Against Violet Sky

Description: Mixed media on paper, 1989, signed and dated lower right ’89. Artist’s title inscribed on a label verso.

A striking Donegal landscape dominated by the deep violet sky of Crabtree’s title and the dark mass of the hillside below. The land is built through vigorous sweeps of black, green and red, contrasting with the broad, quieter areas of colour surrounding it.

Crabtree reduces the landscape almost to abstraction, using a few concentrated marks to give the hillside weight and presence against the openness of the sky. There is a wonderful economy to the composition, with colour and gesture doing almost all the work.

Condition: Rippling to paper and pinholes visible in top corners.
