Peter Sedgley
Peter Sedgley (1930–2025)
Peter Sedgley was a British artist who became a leading figure in Op Art, Kinetic Art, and Light Art from the 1960s onwards. Trained originally as a draughtsman, he turned to painting in the early 1960s and became known for luminous, hypnotic discs and geometric works that played with movement, colour and perception. He was a co-founder of SPACE Studios with Bridget Riley in 1968, creating affordable studios for artists in London — a project that still thrives today. Sedgley’s work developed from precise optical paintings to large-scale light installations and kinetic pieces that responded to changing light and environment. He continued to make and exhibit art into his 90s, and his contribution to British post-war abstraction and kinetic experimentation remains significant.
