Mel Ramos
(1935–2018)
Mel Ramos was a Californian Pop Art pioneer known for his bold paintings that combine comic-book superheroes and pin-up figures with everyday consumer products—think Wonder Woman stepping from banana peels or lounging in cocktail glasses. Mentored by Wayne Thiebaud and influenced by the California art scene, Ramos transformed popular imagery into sharp, playful statements about consumer culture. A respected educator—he taught from high school to university level—he exhibited widely and helped shape West Coast Pop Art’s reputation. His accessible yet ironic visual language remains sought after and admired internationally.
