John Christoforou
(1921–2014)
Born in London to Greek parents, John Christoforou began exhibiting in the 1940s and 1950s. Considered an outsider to the art mainstream, he became a key figure in the movement known as New Figuration, which bridged the abstract art of the 1950s with the bold figurative work of the 1960s. His paintings—often charged with raw colour, dynamic form, and psychological intensity—reflect his position on the edge of convention, where he found the freedom to define his own vision. An important and continually rediscovered artist whose work remains relevant today.
