Alistair Michie

(1921–2008)
Trained as an architect, Alistair Michie served as a fighter pilot in the Second World War before turning to freelance illustration and graphic design. The son of renowned Scottish painter Anne Redpath, Michie found his true calling in 1962 after seeing the work of the Abstract Expressionists at the Venice Biennale. Inspired, he shifted his focus to painting, creating lyrical abstracts that drew on the shapes, rhythms, and colours of the landscape around him. Combining the structural precision of his architectural training with expressive freedom, Michie exhibited widely for the rest of his life, earning a reputation as a late but vital contributor to modern British abstraction.
