Vision of the Month – Art -Tom Coates
This month’s Vision of the Month in Art is this large oil painting by Tom Coates entitled: Rupert Street, North Looking North.
This was painted in 1987-88, and depicts Berwick Street Market, one of London’s busiest markets in Berwick and Rupert Street, deep in the beating heart of Soho. The vibrancy of the morning fruit and veg market is fully captured and creates an immersive experience. I can remember many a night/morning wending my way home and walking through the market area as it begins. There is an excitement about markets setting up, a promise of hope for the day ahead. There is something odd about being the end of night for some and the start of a fresh day for others. Soho has always had that ability to cater for everyone and their different clocks.
Coates has captured the contrast between the light and the dark of the area. The vibrant colours and the hidden shadows. I miss those days in certain ways but would rather be going to market as the start of my day now!
