Bernard Leach

A Bernard Leach original signed pen and ink of The Pilgrim, given to Pamela Chandler, high-society photographer and friend of Leach’s, presumably on the occasion of her leaving Cornwall in 1976.

This is a variant of the image of The Pilgrim, which was used on the front cover of Leach’s book, Drawings, Verse and Belief, first printed in 1973 by Jupiter Books and then in a 1977 edition with revised text and additional poems. The Pilgrim as an image was much used by Leach on his early stoneware pottery.

Hand written on the front: The circum formless Circle with a centre anywhere (A Buddhist concept)

Inscribed on the reverse: 3.7.76 Farewell to Pam from Bernard

Dimensions: 20 x 25cms

Provenance: Pamela Chandler

Condition: Very good, with some minor rippling to the fragile Japon tissue paper
