John Copnall

(1928–2007)
After graduating from the Royal Academy Schools in the early 1950s, John Copnall hitchhiked to Spain intending to spend only a few weeks in Barcelona. Captivated by the Spanish landscape, he travelled widely, living for a time in Ibiza before settling in a dilapidated farmhouse in Benalmádena, Andalucía. He remained there until 1968, when he returned to London to teach at the Central School of Art and Design. Throughout his career, Copnall exhibited widely, developing a body of work that reflects both his Mediterranean influences and his deep commitment to painting.
