Douglas Portway

(1922-1993)

Portway taught in Johannesburg, South Africa before travelling to Spain and then settling in England in 1957. His interests included Zen Buddhism and there is a meditative and contemplative quality to his work. He once said that he liked his viewers to “float, like in water,” as they immersed themselves in his work.
