Douglas Portway

(1922–1993)
Douglas Portway taught in Johannesburg, South Africa before travelling to Spain and later settling in England in 1957. Deeply interested in Zen Buddhism, his work carries a meditative, contemplative quality. Known for his textured, intimate paintings—often quiet, moody, and painterly—Portway encouraged viewers to “float, like in water” as they immersed themselves in his art. His style blends modern sensibility with timeless stillness, creating works of emotional resonance and spiritual calm.
