Antoni Tapies

Antoni Tàpies was a towering figure in 20th-century art, celebrated for his innovative use of mixed media in paintings and assemblages. Drawing on Surrealist and Dada principles, he incorporated found objects — from scraps of wood to discarded furniture — into richly textured works that challenged traditional boundaries. A prolific printmaker, he often integrated symbols such as crosses, numbers, and handwritten marks into his imagery, creating a personal visual language. His art, deeply rooted in materiality and metaphor, earned him global recognition, and in 2010 he was granted the hereditary title of Marqués de Tàpies by King Juan Carlos of Spain.
